A Closer Look At Progress In Washington D.C. Schools

Harvard researcher Paul Peterson has taken a close look at improvements in D.C. public schools during the first three years of mayoral control, when StudentsFirst founder and CEO Michell Rhee served as schools chancellor. Peterson highlights strong gains D.C. students made on a federal test, known as the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Peterson also notes that there are other measures by which D.C. schools are doing better, such as a drop in teacher absenteeism for example. Research clearly shows teacher absenteeism has a harmful effect on kids' learning.
